Apple released its latest generation of mobile products last
week. They added features to their signature iPhone line and released a new
software update, which was expected. However, the newest addition to the family
is the Apple watch, which is sparking conversation on the speed of
technological advancement in our generation.
4G LTE technology was introduced a mere 3 years ago and is
capable of connections which 3G isn’t fast enough for, like transmitting high
definition voice, video and other media services. We often forget how quickly and far mobile
web technology has advanced!
Considering our company name is Technology In Progress, here is our list of the top 3 mobile technologies
and services that have become virtually obsolete in today’s society thanks to 4G:
Downloading music:
The expression “Spotify up, iTunes down” has been circulating
the music region of the internet recently.
Basically, everyone has a smart phone where you can both stream and
store music, so there is no use for an MP3 player anymore. Even more so, downloading music can get
expensive and timely, not to mention takes up valuable storage space on your
smartphone. On-demand streaming services
like Spotify and Beats Music have become the preferred way to listen to music
now. By the end of 2014, 37m people around the world will be paying for streaming music, while 210m will be listening for free on advertising-supported services. This technological shift in music listening
does not only provide us customers with a more seamless, integrated, and
personalized experience, but it is also revolutionizing business models of the
music industry as a whole.
Flash Drives:
In the 90’s there were floppy disks, then came CD’s, then
flash drives. Now in the era of
cloud-based technology and services, we use web-based services like Google
Drive and Drop Box to save and share any type of file! All of these services have corresponding apps
for easy phone access as well. This alternative way of file sharing is not only
free, but it is more convenient and efficient:
you can access what you have saved any time or anywhere with the touch of
a button, and you do not have to carry around a physical piece of storage
hardware. Not to mention, sharing and
collaborating on projects become easier than ever.
Long-distance charges:
With VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) becoming more and
more of a norm in terms of communication methods, there is no excuse to be
racking up those data charges when speaking with someone in another
country. This newfound convenience for
being able to stay in touch with others has presented more opportunity than
ever before for modern globalization through a person-to-person basis.
Lastly, here are some additional technologies that we thought could also be included in this list:
